World Ocean Day 2026

How much of your country's coastline is near where you live? For me, currently it is 20%. I was recently invited to contribute a related commentary for our region. Thanks to Evan Tuchinsky, who also assisted with shortening and editing my initial submission. You can find the final piece here. We are all interconnected.

This is important as we work together and observe World Ocean Day this week.

Marine Magic in Marlborough

What do you imagine in the sunlit shallows and glowing depths?  There were bioluminescent sea-quins from the moana and a kaleidoscope of colours at the NZ Marine Sciences Conference. And what was the Marlborough Mermaid doing up in Auckland and near the Waitakere Ranges at the end of last month? She was, in the city and forest (ngahere), sharing and listening to diverse stories about disappearing land and sea forests and how we can better care for people and their special places.
