There's a Weka in the House!
Happy New Year! I wonder how late into the year one can still continue to wish folks this? Certainly in the "Deep Sounds" it seems fine until February. Our summer holiday period has been interspersed with swims, hikes, boat rides and visits from retreat guests off the track, as well as local neighbours - not all being the human kind! We are fortunate to frequently see dolphins, rays, seals and all sorts of birds in our area. It's not unusual for people to mistake wekas for kiwis . "Our pair" which live in the forest near our deck and who visit almost daily proudly showed off their babies a few weeks ago. It is remarkable to watch the parental care as the adults feed their young and call to them. The grunts you can hear in the video below are from the parent who wasn't too sure about me. Since we don't have air conditioning we leave our doors and windows open to allow for a cool breeze to pass through the house, especially in the afternoons. The wekas ar...
