 Moving House Sounds Style

When we first started exploring an off-grid “boat access only” property plenty of folks wanted confirmation that we’d at least somehow have a car. If one lives off-grid on a tramping track with boat access only, there is no place to park a car and certainly no place to drive one! 

Having no car impacts our life regularly, but especially on move-in day! 

We had to wait days for the right high tide. The 30ft truck arrived on the barge. 



It was about a 500 m stretch from the beach along the track with quad bike and trailer. Then it was up our 78 steps with human muscle power of a team of 11!!!


 
The job wasn't finished then. When living off-grid with no rubbish removal service there was the added challenge of what to do with the packing boxes and wrapping paper!


A one-time request was made and the packing went out for recycling several days later.

So, if you do ever visit us for a cuppa, you might wish to pause and consider how your tea cup and the chair you're sitting on made it to Bluewater Lodge. 

Although we wouldn’t recommend moving like this for everyone, we certainly have some remarkable memories from moving in earlier this month and were thankful for good weather too!

Thanks Kerry. Since so many of us have been using the word "adventure" recently relating to our recent move I just looked up the meaning and according to the Cambridge dictionary:

"an unusual, exciting, and possibly dangerous activity, such as a trip or experience, or the excitement produced by such an activity"....

I think this sounds about correct..!

My, oh my! When you spoke of the 78 steps, that is not what I had in mind! Now I truly get a picture of the struggles you shared early on, topped off by the flooding! Thank you for lifting restrictions so that we am more easily access the blog. I am looking forward to hearing more about your adventures! My love to you all, and tell Liam that the quad fits well on him!

Wow! I can see how a move like this would make one appreciate all the items that made it of her a, up the mountain, and into the house even more! (My moving day is this Friday, and when I am feeling like complaining, I will just think of those steps up the mountain lol)

Thanks Yvonne. "The Big Storm" (July 2021) was felt across this whole area. We were impacted as there was damage to sections of the track which we obviously need for access to our home. It was challenging as repairs to the track were delayed due to the COVID-19 lockdowns and, as mentioned above, we had to wait for the right high tide!

Marine Magic in Marlborough

What do you imagine in the sunlit shallows and glowing depths?  There were bioluminescent sea-quins from the moana and a kaleidoscope of colours at the NZ Marine Sciences Conference. And what was the Marlborough Mermaid doing up in Auckland and near the Waitakere Ranges at the end of last month? She was, in the city and forest (ngahere), sharing and listening to diverse stories about disappearing land and sea forests and how we can better care for people and their special places.
